Central Victorian born, raised, grown and made

The wines under my own Patrick Underwood label represent an intention to make the best possible wines from fruit sources well known and trusted by me.

Facilitated by my first project, Little Reddie, I’ve spent over a decade exploring and experimenting both at home in Victoria and abroad. Sourcing fruit, fermenting, maturing and bringing to market dozens of bottling's in that time.

My efforts in this pursuit were initially fuelled by uninhibited curiosity. Over the years this has given way to an appreciation of mastery, and a wish to follow in the wake of producers who achieve it.

Finding clarity in my personal taste has allowed me to be very focused on the wines that I collect to study (and enjoy), and the methods that I employ.

I have a particular passion for the Nebbiolo wines of Barabresco, Barolo and Bramaterra in Piemonte; Whites from Chablis, Muscadet of the loire and Chardonnay from the Macedon Ranges; and, dry, vinous sparkling wines particularly from Champagne. Wines from these regions are able to bring a deep and pure joy to a table of friends, elevate great meals and mark a moment with visceral sensory memories. I hope my wines offer you the same.

The practice that has become Patrick Underwood wines is varitally and regionally focused on Chardonnay and Nebbiolo from Central Victoria, grown close to my cellar nestled on the western slopes of Leanganook, in Harcourt on Dja Dja Wurrung country.

From beautiful sites, we select specific rows for each cuvée, then harvest, extract, and ferment with great care and precision. The wines are aged in the finest oak for two winters, then given a further winter in bottle prior to release — giving the fruit its best chance to express terroir gracefully.

I’ll continue to explore both site and method as I refine the wines and work toward vineyard ownership. I feel incredibly lucky to be able to present these wines to the market, and I owe a great deal to the growers, my colleagues, and my family for their patient support and encouragement.
